A blog can be a helpful way to share an ongoing line of articles, personal thoughts, event announcements or other material and to generate discussion through posted comments.

Quick Start

  1. In the Add Block dialog box, select Blog to place a blog block on your page (see Creating and Arranging Blocks). The blog controls will appear at the top of your screen.
  2. In the Blog Name box, give your Blog a name.
  3. In the corresponding checkboxes, select if you would like to allow visitors to comment on your blog posts, and if those comments can be anonymous.
  4. (If the anonymous checkbox is not checked, users must be logged in to make a comment).
  5. Publish these changes to save the Blog.
  6. Reopen the blog block and click on the Edit Who Can Post button to select the people who should be allowed to post to this blog. (See Adding People).
    • When logged into the site, users checked in this area will see a Start A New Post link at the top of the blog (see "Posting to a blog" below).
  7. Under Social Networking Settings, check off the Social Networking sites that you would like to be able to share your blog posts with. For each box that you check off, the corresponding icon link for that social networking site will appear at the bottom of your blog posts.
  8. Click Ok to insert your blog block onto the page.

Advanced Options

  1. In the blog controls, click on Show Advanced Options.
  2. Under the Display a pre-existing blog heading, you may select a blog from another page to display in this block. Select it in the drop down list, then click the Use Selected Blog button.
  3. Use the Delete Selected Blog button if you would like to delete a blog from the list.
  4. Under the Advanced Options heading, you may select an alternate design/layout style for your blog in the corresponding drop-down box.
  5. Place the number of posts per page that should display in the Posts per Page box.
  6. If you'd like to receive an email when someone comments on a blog post, input your email address in the Moderator Email field.
    • The email a moderator receives will display the comment, a link to the post, and a link to delete the comment.
  7. Click the Ok button to save changes.

Posting to a blog

  1. To post to a blog, login to your site and at the top of the blog block, you can select a new post type. Choose whether you would like to post Text, a Photo, Audio, or a Video.

Note: To post a web-hosted video (i.e. YouTube) you will want to just use the Share link URL, not the Embed code (i.e. "<iframe width=...").

Showing a teaser link for the blog

You can use the RSS subscription option on your Blog to place a teaser elsewhere on the site. Here's how:

  1. Go to your existing blog page and click on the orange RSS buttonRSS feed.
    • You should be viewing the site as any visitor would. (You should not be in "Change Content" mode.)
    • If the RSS subscription button doesn't show, you may need to enable RSS subscriptions in the Blog controls just long enough to get this working... then you can disable it again.
  2. When you click the RSS button, your browser will open a separate window for the RSS subscription. Click in the address line of that browser window and copy the URL that displays there, for example:
  3. Now go to the page where you want to create a teaser link and create an RSS Feed type of block . Use the address that you just copied as the address for the RSS feed.
    • The RSS feed will display the title and first line of each recent post.
    • You can control how many post links show using the "Number of items to display" option.
    • The RSS feed (your teaser) will be automatically updated from the Blog each time a new post is added whenever the feed refreshes.
