Menus

For general information regarding creating and arranging menu items (pages), please first see Creating and Arranging Pages (Menu Items). Additionally, most menus are design blocks. When changing what your menu displays, you may also want to change the scope of the block. For more, see Design Blocks.

Menu Types

The menu editing controls provide options for creating two types of menus:

  • Dynamic Menus show links based on the page structure of your site or a section of your site.
  • Static menus show only the specific links that you provide.

Dynamic Menus

  1. In the Menu editing controls, select Dynamic from the Menu Content drop-down box.
  2. The Show drop-down box provides four options.
  3. All Visible Pages displays a menu that includes all the pages on the site.
(For the following examples, please refer to the site-map below and assume you're viewing the "Our Staff" page).
    Sample Site Map
    • Example: The menu would display the entire site structure, starting with Home, About Us, Activities, and Learn More.
  4. All Sub-Pages from Parent Pagedisplays a menu that includes all the pages under the page above the current page.
    • Example: The menu would display all pages in About Us: Our History, Our Mission, Our Staff and Our Favorite Movies.
  5. All Sub-Pages from Current Pagedisplays a menu that includes all the pages under the current page.
    • Example: The menu would display all pages in Our Staff: Professional Staff, Support Staff, Volunteer Staff
  6. All Sub-Pages of a Specific Page displays a menu that includes all the pages under a page that you choose. When this option is selected, click the Select Starting Page button to see a dialog box for selecting a page on your site.
    • Example: If the About Us page is the selected starting page, the menu would display Our History, Our Mission, Our Staff and Our Favorite Movies.
  7. Exceptions: A page will not display on a dynamic menu for any of these reasons:
    • That specific page's "Display on menu" box is not checked. To check this, go to the Pages screen and look at the Properties tab for that page (see Creating and Arranging Pages (Menu Items)).
    • A page higher up in the Pages structure does not have it's "Display on menu" box checked.
    • The page is secured and you are not logged in as an allowed user. To check this, go to the Pages screen and look at the Access tab for that page (see Page Access Security).
  8. Click Ok to save your changes and exit.

Static Menus

  1. In the Menu edit screen, set the Menu Content drop-down box to Static.
  2. Click the Add button to add as many items as you would like to the menu.  Each new item will appear in the Menu Items box.
  3. Next, select each the item in the Menu Itemsbox, then edit the specifics about that item:
    • Menu Item Name - The name for this menu item
    • Link URL - The link that will be opened when you click on the menu item. Use the Browse button to access the link dialog box.
    • Open in New Window - Checking this box will set the menu item to open in a new window when clicked.
  4. To rearrange menu items, click on an item in the Menu Items box and drag it up or down to its new location in the menu order.
  5. To create a menu item with drop downs, click an item in the Menu Items box and drag it over another item. When the plus sign appears, release the menu item.
  6. To remove a menu item, select the item and then click the Remove button.
  7. Click Ok to save your changes and exit.
