RSS Feed

Add an automatically-updating list of headlines, weather, or other information to your site using Really Simple Syndication (RSS):

  1. Start by finding the URL (web address) of the feed you want to use. (See Finding an RSS Feed below.)
  2. Copy the URL of the RSS feed.
  3. In the Add Block dialog box, select RSS Feed. The RSS Feed controls will appear.
  4. Click in the RSS Feed URL box and paste in the URL that you copied in step 2.
  5. Select the number of items you'd like to display and place it in the corresponding box.
  6. Click Manually Refresh Content Now to see the new content right away.
  7. Other options:
    •  Automatically Refresh Every: sets how often your web page will check for new content.
    • XSLT URL is typically left blank.  (It sets a style sheet used to transform an XML document for the feed, but unless you know what that means, you can ignore it).
    • Style will change the style applied to the RSS content. (Much of the styling will be controlled by the feed itself).
  8. Click Ok when complete.

Finding an RSS Feed

RSS feeds cover about every topic imaginable, and new feeds are being created every day.  Again, an RSS feed is simply information that updates automatically on your website.  Familiar types of RSS feeds include weather forecasts or news headlines.  Whatever your interest, you can probably find a related RSS feed.  Keep in mind that an RSS feed is only as good as its source.  To explore RSS feeds...

  1. Open a search engine (such as Google, Bing, etc.) and enter "RSS feed" plus your area of interest - for example "RSS feed kids"
  2. Explore the list to find a feed that you would like to use.
  3. The feed will often be marked by the RSS icon: RSS icon
  4. Once you are in the actual feed page, the feed URL (web address) will display in your browser's address bar.
