Site Search

To add a search box to your site, we recommend using Google's Custom Search, a free service provided by Google.  

  1. First, if you don't already have one, sign up for a free Google account at www.google.com. (We recommend creating an account for your organization rather than using a personal account).
  2. Once you have created your Google account, go to https://www.google.com/cse
  3. Click Add under Edit search engines.
  4. In the sites to search field, enter you domain name. When finished click the create button.
  5. On the next screen, in the left sidebar menu, expand "Edit Search Engine," then select the "Look and Feel" menu item.
  6. Select the "Full Width" option. (This option works best in all designs, including responsive).
  7. At the bottom right, Click "Save and Get Code." A page will display with a section of code located inside of a box. Copy this code.
  8. Go to the page on your website that you want to place the search box and add an HTML block.
  9. Paste the code you copied from your Google account in the HTML block, check the "Display in Iframe" box in the upper right and click Ok when complete.

NOTE: If you're a non-profit, you can prevent ads from showing in your search results. In your Google Custom Search account, in the left sidebar, click Business, then check the 'do not display ads' box. 

Keeping your search results accurate

  1. If you've just taken your website live and don't see any results in your Google custom search, it likely means that Google hasn't indexed your site yet. You can alert Google to index your site by submitting your URL to http://www.google.com/addurl.
  2. You can also keep your search results up to date by submitting your sitemap to Google via their free Webmaster Tools. For more on these, please see www.google.com/webmasters/tools/.
    • The URL for your Elexio Website sitemap is http://www.my-domain.com/sitemap.xml (that's your domain name followed by "/sitemap.xml")
